  • Absurdity

"Some day you will die somehow and something's going to steal your carbon"- Parting of the sensory, by Modest Mouse

I was just reading about existentialism... This to be exact. Anyways, being reminded of the idea of "the absurd" I started wondering...How many people actually believe that human existence is "absurd"? Just out of curiosity, do you believe that your life is absurd? Or maybe it isn't entirely absurd...are aspects of it absurd? Or do you find meaning in everything?

Life is absurd but it doesn't necessarily mean all is about sadness or futile attempts at meaning.

"The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus is a good tale for this assertion.

@northernskylights - I have a copy, but I've never made it all the way through (and I agree with you).

I don't believe in some grand meaning to "life".  I do like Modest Mouse though!

Music gives my life meaning.  Amen.

Life is not absurd sometimes people may think it is futile.  Ex.  You live only to die.  It's the complications that arise that makes life absurd.

@ItsWhatEyeKnow - I like Modest Mouse too, but I do think it could be argued that there is a "grand meaning" to life. The problem is that everyone takes both of those words for granted. What would be "grand"? Would it be

    grandiose

    or would it be

    over-arcing

? And what type of meaning as well? Inherent, stable meaning? Or socially constructed meaning? Because there are very obvious examples of both grandiose and over-arcing socially constructed meanings, the problem arises when they are called into question and we lose faith in their power. It's a topic of great interest to me, although I definitely am not as well versed in it as I would like to be.

@Unstoppable_Inner_Strength - Music has definitely given my life focus and direction at times as well. I love it!

@Parsimony - I guess, but from what I understand futility is one of the main concepts that leads to the conclusion that life is absurd. Then again, as I said above I am not as well versed in this subject as I would really like. So, if futility is not enough to make life absurd, what would make life absurd? Or does the very concept of life exclude absurdity?
  • Parsimony

@thecommonfate - It's only futile when you do nothing with your life.  Absurdity is a lack of reason and wisdom.  Like Socrates said "the unexamined life is not worth living". Futility is lacking productivity or success.
